International Alternative Press Festival 2011

The International Alternative Press Festival Kicks off this week with the opening party this friday in London Bridge. Below is a short summary of the festival.

27th May - 13th June 2011

Through a series of workshops, exhibitions, and a two day small press fair, the International Alternative Press Festival 2011 will unite the UK Self Publishing, Zines and Comix scenes with their European counterparts. It is the first event of its kind to be held here in the U.K.

I was approached by a very friendly and kind volunteer who works in a zine shop in Australia called Sticky Institute. They wanted me to send over some copies of my comic/zine "Gissa Job" to stock in their shop, so I thought why not and sent them some copies. Zine Symposium sucess

Last Saturday I was with the Alternative Press at the London Zine Symposium. It was a really good day. I launched my new comic "Gissa Job" which went down really well, I shifted around 25 copies of it and also did a few swaps (including a swap for a mini zine which is only 3cm by 3cm by Fernanda meireles from Portugal). 1st time I've left an event and done that well, plus I meet lots of cool people with cool work. I even got a really nice mention by a lady called Philipa Law on her blog, so thought I would return the favour.

I also managed to get to go to some of the talks where I got to meet the lovely Jossie Long (cool comedian). She is genuinely really nice and makes really funny zines, if anyone is interested in downloading some of her zines for free click here. Here are some pictures from the day taken by Noriko Onohara.

Creative capital presents Alternative Press DIY Workshop

Last week Saturday me and the other Alternative Press guys were asked to put on a day of workshops. I was asked to demonstrate drawing with twigs and ink because that's the method I enjoy using to illustrate my home-made comics. The day went down really well. The point of the whole day was to get people who have never made a zine an opportunity to make one and be creative. We were hoping that people who attended all the workshops whould at the end of the day have there 1st completed mini zine or some sort of idea about how to make one. Here are some pictures of two of the guys whole actually completed a zine on the day and some of the twig and ink drawings people made. This is the 1st time I have ever been part of running a workshop. (New experience) More more pictures click here

The UK Web & Mini Comix Thing 2010 completed sticker passport

Here is a scan from the sticker book collection I put together at the The UK Web & Mini Comix Thing 2010 last weekend. It was surprisingly good fun running around the exhibit collecting a stickers/stamps from all of the other exhibitors. Once I got given the 1st sticker, I was hooked and couldn't leave without filling the whole thing up. Really good idea thanks to Lizz Luney, it was a great way of getting people to interact with each other.

I picked up a few cools things at the event including some of the following: a couple of humorous birthday cards illustrated by a guy called Matt Rosemier, 2 mini comics from Shug , a nice little mini comic by David O'Connell titled "The green lady mystery" and a really nice anthology called birdsong by failboatpress. The birdsong anthology book is really nicely put together and has a nice feel running through the book. They also they used a bit of spot varnish on the cover, I'm a bit of a sucker for spot varnish. I haven't read it yet, but I'm sure it's going to be good.

The UK and mini web comix thing is fast approaching. One of the exhibitors called Lizz luney has come up with this sticker collecting game that people can take part in one the day. She will be giving out paper passports and encouraging people to visit all the stalls to collect stickers or stamps off of participating exhibitors. I felt really honoured to find out recently that the very talented Richard Cowdry gave me a mention in his interview on the Forbidden Planet Blog under the title of who to watch out for this year. I better not disappoint.

The Late Late Breakfast Show Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th is meant to be an unlucky day, but it was really lucky for me. I got take part on Tracey Moberly's show broadcast live from the Foundry on Resonance 104.4fm. It was a proper random panel of interesting people including a radical priest who set up Housmans radical book sellers (Their having their 50th anniversary celebration tomorrow night), Viv Albertine from The Slits and John Sinclair, can't remember the other people's names. I talked about the zine friendly event, zines/comics and a bit about the Alternative Press. It was my 1st time ever on a live radio show and was kind of nervous, but it was good fun and got to hang out with all the people evolved over some lunch. So I had a proper random, but fun day. Many thanks to everyone at the Foundry.

The comic wall at Comica Comiket 2009 ICA

The Comica event was full of lots of cool people,comics and things happening including a comic wall organised Gareth Brookes. He had a really cool idea of getting people to interact and take part in the day's event. Here is my attempt in trying to explain it: He drew a whole load of boxes on paper attached to the wall leading up to the event. The boxes were then numbered. Then he cut up statements from a well known graphic novel numbered them and with the help of Jimi gave them out to people. Then people would have to interpret the statement onto by drawing in the box which matched the statement. As the day went on and the m ore boxes drawn in, the easy it was to work out which graphic novel the statements were taking from. Art at the Foundry

There's always a lot going on in that place, but today there was artwork on display by Lunartik (www.lunartik.com), Phil Corbett (www.Philcorbett.com) and some cool stickers by un-plugged.co.uk, the guy behind it even gave me some free stickers of his plug sockets.

Sunday 1st of November I was at the Handmade & Bound event helping out on the Alternative Press communal table. (Also had some of my work on display). It was good clean fun and lost of interesting home-made books, comics, zines and even a guy who had his own home made and caned goats cheese. Feeling really inspired now.

Alternative Press Festival Day 5: "Alternative Press Fair" 2nd of August

The Alternative Press Fair was the 5th and last day of our five day Alternative Press Festival. It was a fun day, a bit more laid back compared to the other days of the festival, but think it was a nice way to end a full on five days of creativity comics and zines.

For this event I got to share a table with my mates John and Van who also make comics and zines. Some of John's work can be seen in the second to last picture. The event took place at the St. Alosius Social Centre, the same place we had the 1st Alternative Press fair back in February and Peter Lally was in charge of organising this event.

Many thanks to all the people who took part and came to the festival and for Jimi Gherkin for having the idea to start with and Peter Lally, Gareth Brookes, Ceri May, and Chris Bateson who were the other main organisers of various days of the festival. Well done everybody.

Alternative Press Festival Day 4: "Collaborama!" 1st of August

Collaborama was a very exciting and experimental day. During the day we had artists/designers/writers etc selling their home made comics/zines like you get at most small press events, but at the same time everybody incluiding exhibitors and vistors were working on pages to go in a zine which was made on the day. We had the guys from the Footprints Co-operative came down from Leeds with their Risograph machine to print our collabarative zine on the day. Everybody was helping out and some people voluntatered to help collate and folde the zines. There was a great buzz about and lots of people were working hard trying to make the deadline to submit work. Once it was done, there were a lot of happy and proud people around enjoying the zine.

Also on the day there were various workshops going on upstairs such as a screen printing workshop.

In the evening we had Resonance FM's Orchestra performing a written piece by Ed Baxter which was interpreted live by two groups of illustrators using over head projectors. It was quite exciting to watch and I have never seen anything like this take place before. I have a little video footage which I will hopefully upload at some point.

This whole day of events took part in The Miller at London Bridge.

This was a fun night out. This night gave poets, some of which featured in the "Publish You" book a chance to read out some of their poems. I got up too and did a bit of stand up. It went down well, they seemed to enjoy my stories. This night was organised by Ceri May and Chris Bateson.

I managed to film some of it, but had a few camera problems that night, my memory card was full and my battery died all at the same time.

Alternative Press Festival Day 2: "Are You Zine Friendly?" 30th July 2009

"Are You Zine Friendly?" the 2nd day of the 5 day Alternative Press Festival 2009. This event was held in the basement of the Foundry and was organised by Gareth Brookes. This event like the book launch also had a really good turn out. We had one big communal table where people left their zines and comics to be sold while they took part in the Collaborating area, enjoyed live music and drew on the giant sketch books Gareth made and had hanging from the Foundry walls. The whole night had a really good exciting vibe and the time went really quickly. We also had some welcome and unexpected guests including a guy from the evening standard who interviewed Gareth and Jimi and we also had a lady from Dazed and Confused who interviewed the whole team including myself, Jimi, Peter, Gareth, Ceri and Chris. Lets hope they wrote nice stuff about us.

Alternative Press Festival Day 1:"Publish You" Book Launch 29th July 2009

29th of July was the day of our book launch and the 1st day of our five day Alternative Press Festival. It was a very proud day for me seeing the 1st book I ever designed being launched. Actually it was a very proud day for all of us that were involved in the book.
We had a really great response and the Housmans Radical Book Shop where we had the launch was totally packed out, we could barley move.

We also had some interest from various people including a couple who were filming the book launch and are going to be making a documentary on the whole festival. We also got interviewed buy a lady who works for a website called Creative Choices who is going to use our interview on a pod cast for her website. So going to be keeping a look out for that. I also filmed some of the book launch myself and I'm going to upload the videos and my speech when I get a chance.

The book showcases some of what's going on in the small press scene including, illustration, comics, poetry, art books and zines.

The work for the book was selected and compiled by Jimi Gherkin, Peter Lally ,Gareth Brookes and myself. We had to make a lot of hard choices and agree as a group.

Busy times, here is the add I made for the back of the festival programme.

Last night was the book launch of the book I designed and put together for the Alternative Press. The book launch was at the Housmans radical booksellers. The place was fully packed out, we had a really big crowd. Hopefully I will be able to upload pictures and talks that took place on the night.

Last Saturday, I was helping out some of the guys with making banners for the Alternative Press Festival. Here are some of the pictures I took on the day. I used the panoramic mode on the camera phone.

This is my 1st blog entry in a while. I have been really busy working on the book. Here are some pictures of when I was trying to work out the order of some of the entries and the layout of some of the other pages. It's all done now and uploaded to the printers ftp site, received the cover proof and now just waiting for the printers to print the books. Can't wait till they arrive, this is the 1st book I've ever put together , designed, and got ready for print. The book launch should be good.

Just finished my 1st website and managed to upload in all on my own.
It's still kind of basic only has one page but does what it's meant to do. On the left is a list of all the events which are apart of the Alternative Press Festival and when you roll over one a red ring appears around it and the information about that event pops up on the right hand side.

The initial idea was by Jimi for the back of the flyers, but I thought it would make a good website. So we worked together on the design and then I built it got it working using photoshop and Dreamweaver. http://www.alternativepress.org.uk/

Publish You, Anthology Book launch flyer design

This is my 1st blog entry for a while. Been super busy designing stuff, like this flyer, my comic entry for this book along with the Alternative Press website and other tasks which go along side with preparation for the book.

This is my flyer design for the book launch for the book I'm working on with Jimi, Peter and Gareth. The book cover will look very similar to this flyer.

The book launch will be a start to a 5 day festival celebrating the alternative press. More info about the whole festival by clicking here.

We will be launching an Anthology book to showcase some of what’s going on in the small press scene at the moment; it will include work by Mark Pawson as well as a foreword by Roger Sabin and a variety of work from different areas of the scene. The evening will include the declaration of our aims and agendas in the form of a manifesto, as well as talks and discussion on the subject of the contemporary small press scene.

Monday just gone the 11 May 2009 I had another go at open mic. This was my 2nd time at the The LEGION. I was still kind of nervous, but got a really good response. Lots of thumbs up and even a hug. Going to keep going back to get more practice.

Picture of me yesterday taken at the London Zine Symposium. Was a really cool day. Lots of interesting work and lots of interesting people. That place was crazy, there were people visiting from all over the place.There were people from France, America, Bristol, Ireland and even people all the way from South East London. Really glad Jimi invited me along and well done to Edd for putting together a cool day.

I just came across a designer called Irina Blok who has come up with these cool ideas for surgical masks. Irina is planning get them made and to donate the proceeds to Children International to help Mexico fight the swine flu epidemic.

I know I don't usually write much on my blog, but I just came back from an open mic night where I made a second attempt to do some stand up comedy and it went kind of well. It's 1:53am now and I'm all hyped up from being on stage and drinking too much coke. I was really nervous this time and it was a lot different to last time. Last time I was around people I knew, this time it was in front of total strangers apart from my mate Steve. Thanks for the support Steve and thanks to Jimi for telling me about the night and all his encouragement.

I must of done something right, the guys who run the night want me back next week and gave me some really useful advice and encouragement.

I managed to record my act on my little camera, hopefully I can get it up on the web somewhere soon.

I think I better go to bed now. Thanks for reading and good night!

My new font

This is my new font I made the other day to be featured in Erd Yakingun's hand draw type zine. The zine will be called "I didn't hand type this. The Pope DID!". Erd is getting fellow artist/designers etc to contribute to his zine and is putting it together as part of his uni project. Erd hopes to make the zine a regular publication depending on how well this one turns out. In the brief he issued he asked contributors to make some type based on the theme welcome.

I know my contribution is a bit of a crazy idea. My type is meant to look like it's made out of pieces of doner meat and I named it "Welcome to my doner kebab shop".

Here is a paper toy I designed a couple years ago. It's been sitting in my room on my desk for ages and has even been squashed and repaired a few times. I thought I better takes it's pic and document it before it's too late. The design is my own, but I used a random template I found online and just applied my own graphics to it.

It's a really cool zine and Jimi has made a really useful and insightful guide about how he screen prints from home. He also gave a nice little review of one of my latest comics. Thanks Jimi.

This is my 1st attempt of customizing one of them blank Munny toys you can get. It's fun, but you need to plan it 1st or you might mess up a bit. It's best not to get one which is too small because they can be really tricky to draw on.

Just found this pic of me doing open mic for the 1st time on the 1st of feb after the Alternative Press fair. Was a really good day, told some stories about my old part time job working in fast food indusry. I was so nervous, but had a really good response from the crowd. I might have to try it out again some time.

To enter yo also had to write a short piece no more than 100 words. This is what I wrote: My idea: What I am trying to show and represent in my design is Ryu smashing out of the Street Fighter 2 days and into a less pixelated future (Like Street Fighter4). I think it is so cool they kept the game play in the same 2D style, but added 3D effects. I remember playing Street Fighter 4 as a kid on the old Mega Drive and SNES until I had blisters on my fingers. Me and my friends used to have our own tournaments, winner styles on. So this is my tribute of the past looking into the future.

Last week was a week full of Birthdays including my own. Here is a card I made for one of my friends in about 30mins. As you can see it's for Jimi. I was quite happy with the card so thought I would add it to my blog and keep a record of it. Jimi is big on the zine home-made culture, so that's the reason behind it.

I didn't get a Birhday cake this year instead my mum got a cake which said "Man at work", think my mum is trying to hint something to me.

Back in September 2008 I was at Nolia's gallery for the unveiling of Sir Henry Coopers blue plaque. My illustrated poster designs which I created for a Charity event a couple years earlier were put on display for the day and can be seen in the background behind Henry and the others. It's probably might seem a bit odd bloging about this nearly 7 months later, but at the time I didn't have a blog and I wanted to keep a record of this.

Henry was a really friendly and down to earth guy and he even had a chat to me and signed some of my artwork.
